2026 Donor-Advised Fund Deadlines

The contribution into the DAF, not the grant to a charity, is what counts for 2026 taxes. Here's what needs to happen, and when, to hit your clients' goals this year.

12/01

new account paperwork deadline for clients who also want to grant before year-end

12/15

grant recommendation deadline to an ACH-enabled charity, to help ensure Dec 31 arrival

12/31

the IRS deadline for a 2026 contribution deduction

Aligning Deadlines with Client Priorities

If grantmaking in 2026 is your priority: These dates only matter if the client wants the grant itself to reach the charity by December 31. Submit all completed DAF and investment account paperwork by December 1 if the client wants to establish a new account and recommend grants before year-end. To help ensure the charity receives funds before December 31, recommend the grant to an ACH-enabled charity by December 15. Holiday mail delays make later paper-check recommendations unreliable.

If a 2026 tax deduction is your priority: December 31 is the IRS deadline, not the date to begin. Submit account opening paperwork around the same timeframe as the contribution itself, and start earlier for less liquid assets (see the table below).

If a Client Wants to Open a DAF and Get a Grant Out Before Year-End

  1. Submit all completed DAF and investment account paperwork by December 1.
  2. Recommend the grant to an ACH-enabled charity by December 15, to help ensure Dec 31 arrival.
  3. Encourage the charity to enroll in ACH for the fastest, most secure delivery. Holiday mail delays make later recommendations unreliable.

When to Start Contributions

Asset type Start contribution by
Real estate, closely held business interests, LP/LLC interests October 1
Restricted securities, art, collectibles, and life insurance November 1
Mutual fund shares December 1
Publicly traded securities via DTC December 10
Wires and checks December 25

Timing and completion requirements vary by asset. Starting early allows time to resolve missing information, signatures, or transfer issues.

After December 1

It is not too late to open an account or recommend a grant after Dec 1. Open and fund the account as soon as possible. Ren will continue processing complete applications, but year-end grant delivery cannot be guaranteed past this point.

If a charity’s need is urgent, consider having the client give directly to the charity while simultaneously setting up the DAF, rather than waiting on the DAF contribution alone to reach the charity in time.

Want happy clients? Start right away.
Everything runs smoother the earlier you start. Clients travel; deadlines don’t.

Don't Let a Date Slip By

Open a DAF at any time. Ren processes accounts in the order they’re received. The earlier you start, the smoother year-end goes for you and your client.
